been available for 10 years, since before the introduction of the World
Wide Web. After WWW was introduced, activities in the field of text
encoding has increased. It has become necessary to adapt SGML to web
use. XML (eXtensible Markup Language) represents such an adaptation. XML
is very closely related to SGML. One could say it represents a subset of
SGML intended for Web use. SGML and XML do not in themselves define
document structures, but are languages for writing such definitions,
called DTDs (Document Type Definition). SGML is well documented, it is
free and it has a long time perspective. Using SGML, the author can keep
his documents in a non-proprietary format. For the MALVINE project, the
HIT Centre at the University of Bergen is doing an SGML feasibility
study. Catalogues of collections of manuscripts and letters are
converted into both SGML and XML. This is done using scripts and
conversion tables. As DTD we use the generalised EAD (Encoded Archival
Description), maintained by The society of American Archivists and
Library of Congress. The EAD will be used as a common cataloguing format
in the MALVINE project, but the general benefits of SGML and XML will

"Oppgåver for nordisk grunnfag" inneheld 640 ulike oppgåver, hovudsakleg
av utfyllingstypen, som skal øve opp studentane i fonologiske reglar,
morfologisk klassifikasjon, bøyningstypologi og kasusstyring. I tillegg
inneheld programmet ein fullstendig tekstkommentar til eit utdrag frå
Strengleikar, og ein mini grammatikk som er kopla både til oppgåvene og
til tekstkommentaren. Programmet finst både for HyperCard på Macintosh
og for ToolBook på Windows-maskinar. Det inngår i eit større
Fjernundervisningsprosjekt saman med audiogram, videogram og
tradisjonelle lærebøker (Fjernord), utvikla ved Universitetet i
