Note: The characters "I dot", "Z dot" and "z dot" are already in Latin Extended-A, and "Q dot" and "q dot" in Titus. The code points given above should be used for these characters. If "U dot" and "u dot" are accepted by the Titus project, MUFI should use the same code points

8. Additional critical signs

Glyph

Entity name

Code point

Descriptive name

&verbarql;

PUA

VERTICAL LINE WITH LEFT QUILL

&verbarqr;

PUA

VERTICAL LINE WITH RIGHT QUILL

Note: This pair of signs is used to indicate dittography (right quill, then left quill) or erasure (right quill, then left quill) in critical editions of Old Norse texts.

There are two similar characters in the Unicode Standard, viz. 22A6 ASSERTION [= SHORT RIGHT TACK] in Mathematical Operators and 2ADE SHORT LEFT TACK in Supplemental Mathematical Operators. However, the critical signs should be taller (like 007C VERTICAL LINE in Basic Latin) and the quill shorter (like 2045 LEFT SQUARE BRACKET WITH QUILL and 2046 RIGHT SQUARE BRACKET WITH QUILL in General Punctuation). For this reason, we recommend new code points.

9. Additional stroked characters

Glyph

Entity name

Code point

Descriptive name

&Gstrok;

01E4

LATIN CAPITAL LETTER G WITH STROKE

&gstrok;

01E5

LATIN SMALL LETTER G WITH STROKE

Note: The characters "b", "d" and "g" are often used with a stroke to indicate fricative pronunciation, especially in neogrammarian texts (such as Noreen’s grammars). Since "b with stroke" and "d with stroke" have been included (the former as 0180 in Latin Extended-B and the latter as 0111 in Latin Extended-A) in the MUFI recommendation, "g with stroke" should be added.

10. Additional superscripts and subscripts

Glyph

&sup4;

&sub4;

SUBSCRIPT SIX

&sub7;

2087

SUBSCRIPT SEVEN

&sub8;

2088

SUBSCRIPT EIGHT

&sub9;

2089

SUBSCRIPT NINE

Note: These characters are already in the Unicode Standard, in the range Superscripts and Subscripts (2070-209F). Superscript numbers can be used to differentiate diacritical abbreviation signs, such as various types of bars, in display and print. Subscript numbers are often used to indicate line numbers, also in display and print. The superscript numbers 1, 2 and 3 are included in Latin-1 Supplement as 00B9 SUPERSCRIPT ONE, 00B2 SUPERSCRIPT TWO and 00B3 SUPERSCRIPT THREE respectively.
