This session will discuss some of the problems in the creation of hypertext editions and will also offer a progress report on several of the most important projects now underway. Hoyt Duggan will discuss the inadequacy of the current TEI Guidelines to encode manuscripts and early printed books, with particular reference to the Piers Plowman Electronic Archive. George P. Landow will address the problems and possibilities of scholarly annotation in a large-scale electronic edition, with particular reference to a recent project at Brown University. Peter Robinson will discuss two competing models for electronic editions, with particular references to the new electronic editions of Chaucer and Samuel Johnson.
