Where is my thorn?
The standard character sets in Apple's Macintosh do not have easily available thorn
and edh. This means that correctly encoded html with entity names for these characters
will show up funny on a Macintosh.
A workaround is to install fonts that contain the characters in a position that
will make them show up correctly in a WWW-browser. Links to such fonts
are available at:
http://www.georgetown.edu/cball/oe/old_english.html
How to use the fonts:
- Install the fonts Times OE and Kermitfonts (called Maclatin at the Kermit site)
- Under Options/General/Fonts in Netscape (and similar for other browsers) select for either Western or User defined encoding:
- For proportional font: Times OE
- For monospace font: Kermitfont A (either 9 or 12 points)
- If you have installed these fonts for Western encoding they will become default fonts and you don't have to do anything to make them appear
- If you have installed the fonts for User defined encoding, you will have to choose User defined encoding when viewing pages that contain edh and thorn to be able to see them
